La Maison Carré is a 16th-century former ferryman’s house located in Angles-sur-l'Anglin, one of France’s most beautiful villages, just an hour from Poitiers and four hours from Paris. It’s a secluded oasis with everything we love: a delightfully rustic atmosphere, a private garden by the river, and natural materials. Wow!

Our experience here
We had the chance to stay here for three nights... What a stay!
What we liked:
- The feeling of serenity (like in a dream)
- Natural materials
- The view of the ruins at sunset
- The gentle murmur of the river
- The rowboat for an aperitif on the water
- The many walking trails
Jan and Liesbet, a Belgian artist-designer couple, fell in love with the property in September 2019. It’s easy to see why: it’s the most beautiful house in the village. Jan stayed there for a year to meticulously restore it, using as many authentic elements and materials as possible.
When you arrive, Liesbet will be there to welcome you. She speaks Dutch, French, and English with ease.
The house
It is idyllically situated on the banks of the Anglin River, at the foot of the castle ruins. Liesbet has lovingly decorated it in a rustic and charming style.
It has three floors:
1. On the ground floor, the entryway leads to the spacious bathroom with a walk-in shower and original tile flooring
2. On the first floor, discover a large living area with a fully equipped kitchen, dining room, and living room
3. On the second floor, the spacious bedroom awaits you for a restful night’s sleep
For your meals, please note that the kitchen is fully equipped: induction cooktop, refrigerator with freezer compartment, toaster, kettle, Nespresso machine, Bialetti, spices, salt, pepper, and kitchen linens. There is no oven or microwave.
Outside, enjoy the private garden featuring a giant Magnolia grandiflora. It offers a magnificent view of the village and has direct access to the river.
If the weather is nice, we recommend taking a boat ride on the river. Be careful—the current can be quite strong. It feels like you’re in a movie the whole time!
Such a beautiful village
The Maison Carré is located at the entrance to the village of Angles-sur-l'Anglin, about an hour's drive from Poitiers and four hours from Paris.
On the outskirts of the village, from the road, you can see the ruins of the triangular fortress built nearly a thousand years ago on a rocky outcrop. Once impregnable, this 40-meter-high colossus is now nothing more than a labyrinth of collapsed vaults and ruined keep. At sunset, it is breathtakingly beautiful. Visits are available.
Angles-sur-l'Anglin lies by the water like an old memory you never want to forget. Beneath les ruines du château, the stone houses seem to be waiting for the return of a bygone era, bathed in soft light. It’s a quiet, secluded place where every alleyway tells a story. Needless to say, we loved strolling around here.
The village is also home to the Roc aux Sorciers, a world-famous prehistoric site. It features a frieze carved approximately 15,000 years ago. It is one of the most important sites of Paleolithic art in the world.
