BONK Suites is a small hotel nestled among the dunes and seashells in Middelkerke, Belgium. You’re just 50 meters from the beach! There are 6 suites with breathtaking ocean views. We love the young, super-smiling staff (especially Maxim), the sea air, and the boho style. There’s a kind of Ibiza vibe here that stays with you throughout your stay. Here’s our video from the hotel.
Reservation
You can book your stay at BONK Suites via Booking.com, which often offers free cancellation. Send us a message on Instagram if you go, it would make us super happy.
Our advice: specify in the comments that you would like a suite on the highest floor possible, as the view gets better and better the higher you go.
Note: The restaurant is sometimes closed on weekdays, so be sure to check before making a reservation, as it really adds to the hotel’s charm. It’s a bit of a shame to miss out on it, especially in the summer.
Our experience here
We had the opportunity to eat at the hotel restaurant for the first time on a very sunny day: the best cheese croquettes of our stay on the North Sea, absolutely delicious. Everything was delicious and impeccable, including the drinks. We had our iced coffee outside in the dunes, with pleasant music playing in the background. On a whim, we also asked if we could visit the rooms upstairs.
We came back a second time, this time to stay for three nights! What we loved: everything! In particular: the care taken in communication (before, during, and after our stay), the note left by the housekeeper after cleaning the suite, and the sunset over the sea, visible every evening from the suite.
When you discover the hotel, you immediately feel like you're on vacation. You're surrounded by sand dunes. The sea is nearby. Shops are located further away, about 500 meters away. Watch this video to get an idea. We've also created this mapto show you the exact location.
The suites
The six suites are spacious with ocean views, tastefully decorated, and almost all similar in design. They have a charming Moroccan flair.
Depending on the suite you choose, you will have access to the following amenities: bohemian decor, bathroom with walk-in shower, Japanese toilet (very hygienic), kitchenette for cooking if needed, Nespresso coffee machine, sitting area, Smart TV, Bluetooth speaker, air conditioning, and Wi-Fi. There are many little touches that are much appreciated.
The amenities are from the Atelier Rebul brand. They're among our favorites. The whole suite smells wonderful. We still think about them days after returning home.
A wine from Romania
A bottle will be waiting for you in the refrigerator when you arrive. It's on the house... But do you know the story behind this wine?
It all started in a small Belgian town called Zwevezele, where the owners' grandparents ran a restaurant and a button factory.
When Charlotte, the daughter, tried to sell the factory machines at a market in Brussels, no one paid any attention. Until a fortune teller whispered, "Not here. In Romania. They will find their value there."
So they set off on a bumpy road through unknown lands. They traded the machines for barrels of local wine, a wine so rich and honest that they felt like they had discovered gold.
When they returned to Belgium, they gave the restaurant's customers a taste of the wine, and they instantly loved it.
Today, decades later, it is still this same Romanian wine that is served. Every sip is like a journey from Zwevezele to Bucharest, from a curious spark to a family tradition. Cheers!
Breakfast
When you wake up, enjoy a hearty breakfast made with fresh local ingredients. The price is €50 for two people. Upon request, it can be delivered right to your suite’s doorstep without disturbing you.
On the menu: pastries, bread, fresh fruit, eggs, cheese, smoked fish, yogurt, jams, fruit juice, and hot drinks.
The Seafood Bar
The hotel's seafood bar is very pleasant and offers delicious food: tasty tapas, Provençal dogfish, bouillabaisse, sole, shellfish, and other assorted fish. It's easy to be tempted by a cocktail on the terrace or in the dunes. Try the Bonkje, for example, the house aperitif made with herbs, grapefruit, and mezcal! Tested on site and approved. Very refreshing.
Between the dunes and the sea
BONK Suites is located in Middelkerke (Westende to be precise), on the Belgian coast, by the North Sea. The location is so peaceful. Watch this video to discover the beach there. Shops, supermarkets, and bakeries are only a 10-minute walk away. The tram is only a few minutes away, which is convenient.
Westende has its own rhythm, calm, bright, and discreetly lively. There is something in the air here, something you feel when you walk on the dunes or look at the sea. The light seems softer, the sun gentler, and even the clouds seem to take a deep breath before arriving.
If you're looking for a place to eat well in the area, we're partial to Brasserie Zuidburg in Veurne, which is very popular with locals. Delicious food and a lovely terrace.
Another restaurant idea just a 5-minute walk away: Barenzo. Great atmosphere, friendly service, and quality cuisine. The prices are a little steep for some dishes, but that's often the case on the Belgian coast. Ask for one of the tables with high chairs opposite the bar—they're the best.
The price starts at about 185€ per night for 2 people.
Yes, breakfast is available as an optional extra.
