We recommend booking your stay at Castel Maurn via Booking.com, which often offers free cancellation. Send us a message on Instagram if you decide to go—we'd love to hear from you.
Our stay
We stayed here for one night and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Our favorites: the warmest welcome of our trip, the hosts Walter and Sabine, who went out of their way to make us feel at home, the delicious breakfast served in our room, the convenient and modern parking, the absolutely magical historic decor (especially in winter), and the little cat that greeted us every time we passed by.
What we liked a little less: Walter could sometimes be a bit pushy about getting us to book a superior room (an upgrade) or to tell our friends about the place. Or even to make a reservation at one of Castel Maurn’s partner restaurants. We fully understand the financial pressure, and it was always handled with great tact. But this sort of thing should always come from the guest, not the owner. Especially in this price range.
An old castle
Castel Maurn is not a recent construction: its foundations date back nearly 1,000 years. Once an aristocratic residence, it has stood the test of time before being meticulously restored to become the luxurious hotel it is today.
The property has been carefully restored, blending medieval charm with refined, contemporary elegance. Every detail—from the natural stone and weathered wood to the panoramic glass windows offering views of the Dolomites—has been carefully designed to provide a hors du temps experience.
The most spectacular part? During the renovation, medieval and Renaissance frescoes were discovered beneath layers of paint. They were restored by experts and now adorn the walls of the suites, giving guests the feeling of sleeping in a private museum.
The suites
Depending on the suite you choose, you will have access to the following amenities: queen-size bed, bathroom with shower or spacious freestanding bathtub, bidet, hairdryer, towels, bathrobe, slippers, spacious living room with comfortable sofa, Smart TV, fully equipped kitchen, safe, air conditioning, and Wi-Fi.
Unlike a traditional hotel, each suite features its own state-of-the-art built-in kitchen. This allows you to enjoy complete independence if you wish, while still benefiting from services worthy of a 5-star hotel: concierge service, housekeeping, and breakfast.

We don't recommend Room 4, which is a bit too small for our taste. However, we highly recommend Suite 1, where we stayed. The room is simply wonderful. It undoubtedly had the best bedding and sheets of our entire stay in the Dolomites.
The spa
During your stay, we highly recommend relaxing in the spa, located in the basement. It’s a beautiful, beautifully restored space with a real sense of character. The spa features a steam room, sauna, cold plunge pool, and a lounge area where you can enjoy a cup of tea. Soak up the energy of the massive rocks and feel the warmth.
In the summer, let your gaze wander over the shimmering surface of the outdoor pool in the garden. Relax on the lounge chairs in the castle garden and take a deep breath. The air here has a quality you won’t find anywhere else in the world—it’s hard to describe.
Location
Although nestled in a quiet historic village, Castel Maurn is just a few minutes away from one of the best ski areas in the Alps: Kronplatz. It offers the perfect balance between a romantic getaway and high-level sports.
What can I say about the surrounding area? Everything is beautiful, and it’s definitely our favorite part of the Dolomites.
About 40 minutes away, you won't want to miss the Dolomites' most famous attraction: Lago di Braies. It's undoubtedly the most beautiful lake in Italy, magically surrounded by mountains. Here's a drone photo from our winter trip. But it's even more magical when the weather is nice.
Are you heading to the lake from Castel Maurn? We have a suggestion for you.
Leave the main road behind and take the Passo Furcia, a spectacular climb winding through wild mountain pastures and dense forests. This mountainous route offers breathtaking views of Plan de Corones before descending into the Braies Valley via the winding roads of the Sonnenberg. It’s the perfect route for exploring the lake’s most secluded slopes.
If you enjoy hiking in the mountains, we have another idea we absolutely have to share with you. Start by entering "Pederü Berggasthaus" (it's a mountain inn) as your destination in your GPS. You'll pass through San Vigilio, which we love. The road then becomes picture-perfect. Here's another video with the mountains on either side.
Once you arrive at the hotel, leave your car in the parking lot and set off on the marked trail leading to the famous Fanes Plateau. After a spectacular climb up winding roads from the valley floor (the Val de Rudo), you’ll emerge onto this high-altitude plateau, situated at around 2,000 meters. In winter or early spring, this plateau remains snow-covered for a long time, offering a wild, lunar landscape surrounded by limestone peaks. Magical!
