Leuchtenburg am See is a hidden gem on the shores of Lake Caldaro in South Tyrol, Italy. Bolzano is only a 20-minute drive away. There are only 12 rooms and a charming private beach on the lake with a small cabin, sauna, and romantic rowboat. We used a drone to film the lake.

Our stay by the lake
What a stay... We weren't expecting this when we booked. The photos are quite misleading compared to reality. The exterior of the hotel is simpler than expected (roadside), but everything else is... Wow.
Right from the start, we felt very comfortable thanks to the warm welcome from Kat and her team, especially Caroline, who was absolutely lovely! Caroline was the friendliest, funniest, and most genuine person we met during our stay. She even made an effort to speak French.
What we liked best:
- A genuine hotel concept and personality (that's what we want when we travel!)
- The magical view of the lake from the restaurant in particular
- The long table on Mondays, which is simply charming
- The private beach by the lake, which we didn't expect at all (video)
- The comfortable bed, my goodness (one of the best on Let's Go My Love)
- The mini spa downstairs, which isn't incredible but very cute
- The cozy heated floor in the bathroom
- It's a small detail, but their Instagram account really makes you want to go there
The 12 rooms
Some of our favorite rooms:
1 • Lavason Room • Photo • Photo
2 • Rastenbach Room • Photo • Photo
3 • Laimburg Room • Photo • Photo
4 • Kreit Room • Photo • Photo
5 • Römigberg Room • Photo • Photo
Depending on the room you choose, you will have the following amenities: king-size double bed, view of Lake Kaltern, wooden beams, loggia facing the lake, vaulted ceiling, bathroom with shower, freestanding bathtub, hairdryer, sitting area, air conditioning, safe, and Wi-Fi.
Our favorites: the Römigberg suite with a freestanding bathtub in front of the window offering a view of the lake. And the Windegg room on the top floor, which was ours. It's the quietest one.
The restaurant and its breathtaking view
The restaurant welcomes you in the morning and evening for your meals. Click on this video to see the unique view of the Dolomites. And that was in winter... but it's undoubtedly even more beautiful in summer.
The evening cuisine is excellent. The chef's name is Luca. He pays particular attention to the best ingredients: vegetables grown using permaculture methods, meat from South Tyrol, and farmed fish. Luca cooks with passion. You can see that, but above all, it's a real treat.
Every morning, enjoy a delicious breakfast at a time of your choosing. On the menu: bread baked overnight by hand using natural yeast and organic ingredients, eggs cooked to order, pistachio paste from the Oberhöller chocolate factory in Sarntal, pancakes, yogurt, homemade jams made by Kat's dad (Markus), Speck from the Zelger butcher's shop in Auer, and lots of other goodies.
The mini-spa in the wine lounge
During the day, we recommend checking out the mini-spa in the basement. It features a walnut sauna in a vaulted cellar, a panoramic terrace, and a wine bar where you can pour yourself a glass of wine at any time of the day or night—and, of course, the panoramic terrace. It’s so well thought out and beautifully designed. Tip: Go there right when it opens or late in the evening to enjoy it in complete privacy.
Location
The hotel is located on Lake Caldaro, at an altitude of 216 m, in the municipality of Caldaro sulla Strada del Vino. You are on the quiet, non-touristy side, which is an advantage. The lake water usually reaches over 28°C in summer!
Looking for a good restaurant in the area? Nearby, we really liked a ridiculously simple, typically Italian place, where retirees sometimes play cards. The name is Ristorante Pizzeria Altenburgerhof. From memory, we were the only tourists there that day, but we received a very warm welcome.
