hôtel des Grandes Écoles an absolutely charming 3-star hotel located near the Théâtre du Panthéon and Rue Mouffetard, in le quartier latin . It feels like a country house, but right in the heart of the city. We love strolling through the courtyard when the weather is nice and maybe bumping into Lutèce the cat. Our stay
We had the opportunity to spend a night here and it was really great! We stayed in room 146 overlooking the courtyard. What we liked best: arguably the best neighborhood in Paris, the green inner courtyard, the friendly staff and the value for money.
A historic boarding house
Established in 1927, the hotel was for many years a boarding house for teachers and students. Since then, the place has stood the test of time. Some of the team have been working here for decades, notably Dorotha, who has been in charge of breakfast for 35 years. There is a loyal clientele who return year after year, and many couples like to return to their favorite room.
For the record, the owner (Alexandre) worked here as a receptionist over 20 years ago. He does his utmost to preserve the hotel's romantic soul.
The arrival
On site, if you arrive by car, the entrance to the private parking lot is just to the left of the hotel entrance. Please note that there are only 12 spaces, so we advise you to book your stay well in advance. The cost is €25 per day.
After passing through the gates, you walk along a bucolic interior alleyway back to the Paris of yesteryear. You discover a flower-filled inner courtyard and a large 19th-century family home. You can barely hear the noise of the street, and it's very quiet. A true Parisian delight!
The rooms
There are 51 rooms whose surface varies between 10m² and 25m² for the largest. The decoration seems to be frozen in time and has a country style: walls in toile de Jouy, wooden furniture and bronze sconces with a patina of time. The toile de Jouy is a colored cotton fabric on which figures with decorations and landscapes appear.
Some of our favorite rooms:
1 • Classic Room • Photo • ☁️
2 • Garden View Room • Photo • 🌿
3 • Superior Room • Photo • 🌳
Depending on the room you choose, you'll enjoy the following amenities: bright, flowery decor, wi-fi connection, queen-size bedding, private bathroom with shower, bath and toiletries. There is no television.
If possible, ask for a room overlooking the inner courtyard rather than the pedestrian street, which is also very quiet. Of the 51 rooms, 42 have a view of the inner courtyard.
Location
L'hôtel des Grandes Écoles is located near the famous rue Mouffetard, the Place de la Contrescarpe, the quays of the Seine, the Pantheon and the Luxembourg Gardens. You're in the 5th arrondissement of Paris, in the heart of quartier Latin, on the Left Bank. It's a student district, with the Sorbonne University close by. For us, it's the best neighborhood in Paris, the most pleasant and the warmest.
We tested 2 good addresses in the area:
- The Coffee Panthéon right next door to the hotel for a great cup of coffee during the day. Here's a photo to see our order.
- And our favorite if you're looking for a restaurant: Terronia. This Italian restaurant is tucked away in a little alleyway just a few minutes' walk away. Everything is homemade! Absolutely delicious. Take a look at this photo to discover our entrance.
