Bast is a small 50m² design house located in a private forest near Hasselt and Tongeren, Belgium. It's a rare place, hidden between the trees, with an infinite view over the fields. You'll feel like you're on an island away from it all, but in fact you're not that far from civilization. Here's a lovely aerial view to give you an idea.

Our experience

We were very lucky to be able to sleep here and have been in constant contact with Ine (the owner) on Instagram ever since. What we liked best: the exceptional location on the edge of the forest, the quality of the equipment and the bath with the skylight in the ceiling.

Ine works in set design for the cinema. Building the cabin, finishing the interior and even some of the furniture and decoration: she did it all with her husband!

The custom-built home

The interior of the house welcomes you into a magnificent atmosphere, bathed in the changing light filtered through the trees. Almost all the furniture is custom-made, from the sofa next to the stove to the warm-toned kitchen island. Our favorite is the bathtub, set beneath a veritable skylight.

Amenities include a king-size bed, fully equipped kitchen, bathroom with designer bathtub and walk-in shower, Norwegian wood-burning stove from Jotul, underfloor heating and air conditioning. No wifi or TV.

There's no wifi or TV. As Ine says, "Offline is the new luxury", and it's so true.

The kitchen is fully equipped if you'd like to whip up some tasty dishes. You're welcome to bring a few provisions with you. It is also possible to order a breakfast box from a partner caterer. You will receive the link to place your order in the week before your stay.

The terrace with lounge chairs

Outside, enjoy the sunny terrace for a romantic meal, with birdsong in the background. There is a picnic table, a fire pit, and two deck chairs, perfect for reading a book with a drink on sunny days.

Between the forest and the fields

Bast is ideally located on the edge of the forest and fields of the Hesbaye region. To get there, you have to travel the last 2 km on an unpaved road. The surrounding area is ideal for walking or cycling. You're 15 min by car from Tongeren, Belgium's oldest city, 25 min from Hasselt and 35 min from Maastricht.
