Nutchel is an unusual forest village located in Martelange, in the Ardennes, close to the Belgian-Luxembourg border. It's a natural estate with 30 pretty wooden cabins, 11 of which have a Nordic bath at the top. A true ode to nature, with wood-burning stove, oil lamp, candles, bay window and forest views. Our experience
We've been lucky enough to stay here twice, and each time it's been a complete change of scenery. We were able to walk in the woods, build a fire, prepare a nice barbecue on the terrace and even bathe in the Nordic bath (maintained at 38°C all year round) at the top of our cabin with a panoramic view of the whole forest!
Nutchel has something very special, with an authentically rustic ambience. The interior decoration in the cabin is like something out of a movie. It's not luxurious, but it has a soul.
We've been in touch with Julie on site for several years (she's been here since the very beginning of Nutchel) and we also had a beer together on our second visit to enrich this text.
The estate
When you arrive on the estate, you cross a bridge and can leave your car in the private parking lot. You're always warmly welcomed by a member of the team in the estate's main hut. Communication is possible in French, Dutch, German or English.
In the main hut, there's also a small grocery store to stock up on supplies, a fire pit and a lovely terrace for a drink. If you've ordered breakfast or a barbecue basket, this is the place to pick it up.
Now head for your cabin in the forest estate. Look at this map of the estate to find your way. The main entrance is at the top of the picture, near the parking lot.

Depending on the cabin you choose, you'll enjoy the following amenities: interior design by Dille & Kamille, kitchenette with gas stove, wooden cooler as mini-fridge, coffee machine, bathroom with toilet and shower, comfortable king or queen-size bed depending on the cabin, wood-burning stove, Nordic bath, outdoor terrace, barbecue and chairs by Lafuma.
The cabins are built from the finest local wood, with the greatest respect for nature. They are set into the ground using metal stakes, leaving no trace if the cabin is dismantled.
A true hygge experience awaits you during your stay: oil lamps, candles, a good book to read, a plaid, a hot water bottle, a cup of tea and a large bay window to admire the surrounding forest. Magical, especially when it's raining or snowing outside.
Hygge is a word of Danish origin referring to a feeling of well-being and a warm atmosphere.
By the way: there's everything you need to build a fire in your cabin's wood-burning stove. A supply of wood is ready on arrival, and you can also fetch wood from 2 wood sheds in the heart of the estate.
There's no wifi, but 4G is fairly easy to pick up.
The dogs
Dogs are welcome. But only in certain cabins, and a package costing €30 per dog for the duration of your stay is compulsory. This package includes a basket, a bowl, a small welcome snack and a few recommendations for dog-friendly walks. They'll be super happy here.

A few tips
- Pack slippers in your luggage
- If it's hot, take a mosquito repellent or citronella candle.
- The local coffee is quite strong, so add a square of sugar and some milk, and it's immediately better.
- Take some salt and pepper (we couldn't find any in our kitchen).
- Be careful not to jam the wick of oil lamps by lowering it too far.
- Nutchel often offers a very attractive discount if you decide to extend your stay at the last minute. You'll need to apply on the spot. And no later than the day before your departure.
