A former toll booth

For the record, Zollhaus is a German word for tollbooth or customs house, depending on the language. In 1844, on the Nydeggbrücke bridge, customs officers Schuster and Kohli were responsible for collecting taxes from all those wishing to cross the bridge and enter the old town. Since the abolition of these taxes in 1853, and after several tenants, the toll house at the south-eastern end of the bridge now houses the suite.

The apartment

When you enter the apartment, you’ll find a very cozy space with the following rooms: a modern bedroom, 2 bathrooms (including one on the upper floor with a freestanding shower), a living room, a small dining area with an Adrianos coffee machine (external link), and a private terrace with a view of the river and the old town. The apartment has a total area of 70 m² and is spread over two floors.

The handcrafted, custom-made furniture from Plinio Il Giovane (external link) brings luxurious and sophisticated comfort to your home. Everything is lovingly decorated—and what charm!

Breakfast

In the morning, a delicious breakfast is delivered right outside the apartment door. On the menu: a traditional Swiss selection of cold meats, cheeses, breads, fresh milk, yoghurts, croissants, cereals, juices, and often fruit platters.

Catering

For lunch and dinner, head to the Altes Tramdepot brasserie (external link), located a 2-minute walk from your apartment—a well-known spot on the Bernese culinary scene. The specialty here is craft beer. The atmosphere is simple and friendly.

And don't miss the delicious ice cream in the Gelateria Eiswerkstatt! The products are of the highest quality, including organic milk from Emmental, pistachios from Sicily and hazelnuts from Piedmont.

Location

The One Suite Hotel Zollhaus is located in the middle of the Bärenpark in Bern, Switzerland. Cross the river to discover the old town. Stroll along the arcades, visit the Museum of Fine Arts and don't miss the house at 49 Kramgasse: Einstein lived there for several years with his family. We also love the cobbled streets, sculpted fountains and Roman numeral clocks, including the famous Zytglogge.
