Our stay
We were lucky enough to stay in the Cabane "Léon" for 2 nights. It was wonderful. What we liked best: the wild beauty of the estate, the fabulous view from our cabin, the wooden bathtub and the real sense of disconnection. We'll tell you all about our experience below and give you a few tips.
History
With les Cabanes de Rensiwez, owner Olivier set out to create cozy nests in the heart of the wilderness. Even as a child, he and his brother loved to build cabins of all kinds: big, small, underground, perched in the air or on the water's edge. Singular universes that already embodied a strong desire for nature and freedom!
The arrival
When you arrive on site, you cross a small bridge. You can then park your car in the small private parking lot near reception, while you check in. The staff are very friendly: you'll receive your key, a mini-flashlight and a few welcoming touches.
The reception is in French and Dutch: there are two French-speaking receptionists who also speak Dutch, and one Dutch-speaking receptionist who also speaks French. English is, of course, not a problem. If necessary, they can speak German, but this remains at a basic level.
Here's a map of the estate to help you find your way around: the reception is in the cabin furthest to the left on the map. Feel free to zoom in.
Once you've checked in, you can take your car and park it in one of the 3 parking lots located in the center of the estate. Then it's time for adventure.
The cabins
There are 32 luxurious cabins by the water, on the hill or atop a splendid ridge.
Here are a few of our favorite cabins:
1 • Ernest's Cabin • Photo • 🧙♂️
2 • Antoinette's Cabin • Photo • ⛰️
3 • The Life for Two Cabin • Photo • 🪅
4 • Gaspard's Cabin • Photo • 🍎
5 • Treehouse • Photo • 🌳
6 • Werner's Cabin • Photo • ☀️
The cabins on the ridge are the most luxurious and the most remote. From the reception area, it's about a 20-minute walk, including a section on a small wooden path. The views over the valley are breathtaking, especially from "Cabane de Jean", which is located at the summit and offers a bird's-eye view of the river.
We really like the 8 waterside cabins, which offer a more bucolic, village atmosphere, a little like in Lord of the Rings. They are relatively close together. Finally, the hillside cabins are hidden in the vegetation and offer real privacy. You have the impression of being in the middle of the jungle.
A few comments on the cabins
- Almost all cabins are dog-friendly
- Almost all cabins require a minimum 2-night stay, but some cabins allow a 1-night stay.
- All cabins offer a wooden bathtub
- There are 8 cabins with Nordic baths and 4 cabins with outdoor baths.
The equipment
Depending on the cabin you choose, you'll enjoy the following facilities: bedroom with king-size bed, fully-equipped kitchen, wood-burning stove with everything you need to light a fire, indoor and/or outdoor bath, Nordic bath, sauna, small bathroom and toilet. Bed linen, towels and bathrobes are provided.
All cabins are decorated and furnished with raw, natural materials, echoing the surrounding nature. Wood and stone create a charming rustic feel. In the evening, fire and candles create a cocooning atmosphere and a real sense of well-being.
There's no wifi or TV. But you can easily connect to your 4G or 5G from your smartphone.
If you're celebrating a special occasion, you can ask our team to prepare a romantic decoration for your cabin.
Nordic bath
If you book a cabin with a Nordic bath, be aware that it takes between 3 and 5 hours to heat up the Nordic bath. You can ask for optional pre-heating (50€) so that you can enjoy the Nordic bath as soon as you enter the cabin. The sauna, on the other hand, heats up in 45 minutes on average.
Catering
In the morning, a breakfast option is available for €30 for 2 people. On the menu: coffee or tea, cold meats, orange or apple juice, bread baked on site, pastries, jam, honey and other delicacies. If you're on the ridge, it's delivered free of charge near your hut at around 9am. If not, you can pick it up at reception, or request delivery as an option.
For your meals, you can order aperitif baskets, a 3-course menu prepared by a caterer or a barbecue menu. We tried the Barbecue menu (€58 for 2 people) and the meat was delicious! On the menu: papillote of potatoes, rosemary, trio of homemade sauces, salad, crudités, scampi skewer with green pesto, beef, marinated turkey skewer, herb sausage and lamb chop with thyme.
Location
The Domaine de Rensiwez is nestled in the heart of a picturesque location: the Deux Ourthes Nature Park, very close to Houffalize in the Belgian Ardennes. There are many things to do in the surrounding area, including hot air balloon rides, fishing, kayaking, and numerous hiking trails.
If you're looking for a rustic restaurant nearby, there's Le Charme de Wibrin not far away. It's in our top 5 in all of Belgium. A real mountain chalet, very cozy in winter and with a lovely, quiet terrace. Delicious food and... Don't miss the crêpes!
Finally, do you know the legend of the Valley of the Fairies? As you leave Rensiwez towards Houffalize, there's a mysterious sign about it. This is the valley of a stream called "Martin Moulin", where fairies are said to have taken up residence long ago. They were graceful and benevolent, but not often seen. It is said that they were born in the mists of the river, where the Moudehan cliff falls into the Ourthe.
